About Raw Fed Cats

For the Love of Animals
Ever since I was a little girl I’ve always loved animals. But for some reason, from very early on there was always one kind of animal that has held a very special place in my heart. It seems I’ve had a deep fascination with felines forever. There’s just something so mysterious and enchanting about cats that I find absolutely captivating.
In the summer of 2005 I adopted two kittens from a local animal shelter. It had been many years since I’d had any pets, and the first thing I did after I brought my new kittens home was to go to the local grocery store and buy a bag of kibble and a few cans of cat food.
A few days later though, I began to remember something a friend had told me many months earlier that I just couldn’t seem to get out of my mind. He’d said that he and his wife, who breed and train show dogs and have a whole menagerie of critters, fed all their animals a totally raw diet. Something clicked in my mind at that point. I realized that what my friend had told me was somehow really important, and suddenly I found myself combing the internet for any and all information I could find about raw diets for domestic pets.
What I discovered was that there was a good bit of information available about feeding raw food to dogs, but that there was very little to be found about raw diets for cats.
Then I discovered Yahoo Group’s rawfeeding list, which led me to their sister list, the rawcat list.

Not only are the folks on these lists some of the most knowledgeable and experienced people around when it comes to understanding how and why to feed cats and dogs a diet of whole raw foods, but they’re also exceptionally willing to give of their time and expertise so that others can also learn how to feed their pets the most natural and healthy diet possible.
I spent hours following the discussions and reading the archived messages on these forums, doing my best to soak up the information and wisdom being imparted there. I also read every link I could find on raw feeding, so as to familiarize myself with as many different philosophies and approaches to raw feeding as possible. Even more time was spent studying and learning as much as I could about the anatomy and physiology of both wild and domestic canines and felines.
As I was doing all this research, I began to feed my young kitties a diet of whole raw foods. And as time went by and I saw that my cats were thriving on their raw diet, I became more and more confident about how and why to feed my pets this way. With this newfound confidence came deeper insights into the bigger picture in terms of what’s really behind the disturbing decline in health in recent times among so many of our beloved pet cats and dogs.
One thing led to another, and before I knew it I was beginning to get a real education – not only about raw feeding for pets, but also about the horrors of the commercial pet food industry, the untold dangers of vaccinations, and the incredible amount of damage being done to the health of generations of companion animals as a result of both of these issues.
The more I began to connect the dots with respect to animal health, the more I found myself wishing that there was a comprehensive resource where people could go to learn what I had, so that they too could learn how and why to confidently raise and feed their pets more naturally and holistically. I felt as if there ought to be place where animal lovers could go to get the kind of information they would need to begin to put the pieces together and comprehend the reasons why we’re seeing such an explosive epidemic of chronic degenerative disease in the domestic pet population these days. It felt important that information be made available to people so they could understand what steps they might take to either prevent their own pets from succumbing to one of these chronic illnesses, or to help those that were already sick get better – naturally.
Since I could find no such resource aside from the Yahoo forums, I decided to create one myself. And so, Raw Fed Cats was born. 🙂
